Pointers on Paper Shredder Repair and Maintenance

Keeping your paper shredder oiled is the best way to maintain its performance and efficiency. It doesn't matter if you have a strip-cut shredder or a cross-cut shredder, its cutter head or blade should be properly and regularly oiled, especially if you use it very often.
You should oil a cross-cut shredder after every half hour of operation to maintain its optimum performance. A strip-cut shredder on the hand is good with once-a-week lubrication, but it should be oiled more often if used more than five hours a week. However, it's an acceptable practice to lubricate every time the bin is emptied.
To lubricate, turn off the paper shredding machine and unplug it. Clear the shredder and cutter head from paper bits that may have jammed. Spray the lubricant in a stream through the throat or opening of the shredder.
Next, plug the machine back in and switch it in reverse mode. Run the shredder in reverse for 30 seconds to enable the oil to coat the blade well. Then, run the shredder in forward mode for another 30 seconds to spread the oil. Feed a few paper sheets to the shredder to absorb excess oil.
When lubricating a paper shredding machine, make sure to use oil that's specifically intended for the purpose. Other oils or greases not recommended for shredding equipment cause build-up of dirt and debris that damages or dulls the cutter head.
Always empty the bin once it's full to prevent paper particles building up on the cutter head. Although sensitive paper documents have been shredded, they can still be reconstructed. Place shredded paper in a large, safe storage, ready for transport to a reputable paper mill.
Never feed the shredder with other materials which the machine isn't intended or designed for. Some shredders are intended only for paper, others for discs. Do not overfeed or overwork the machine because excessive shredding damages it. Take out staple wires, clips and tapes in paper before shredding.
Troubleshooting or fixing shredding equipment should be the least of your concern, unless you're not keen about proper maintenance. However, there are instances when your shredder simply gets jammed and stops working.
Never attempt to repair paper shredding machine that's under warranty. Call your dealer or customer service agent for help whenever you encounter failure or malfunction. If the machine is hired or rented, call your service provider to repair it to prevent further damage to the machine.
To maintain warranty, remain in compliance with manufacturer's instructions. Non-compliance to manufacturer's instructions usually invalidates warranty. Regular lubrication is often critical to maintaining shredder performance and paper shredder warranty.
